Unity of First People of Australia
The Unity of First People of Australia, a not-for-profit Aboriginal-run organisation, created the Diabetes Management and Care Program in remote Aboriginal communities in Western Australia.
The Diabetes Management and Care program aims to arrest the rising incidence of diabetes in indigenous communities by working with the community to develop a community-owned and managed sustainable Community Health Plan.
The basis of the plan is the prevention, management, treatment and care of diabetes and promotes a whole change of lifestyle behaviours, ensuring that Indigenous Australians take responsibility for their own health and well being.
The Australian Children's Trust’s donation to the Unity of First People of Australia will assist with a Mobile Diabetes Prevention Unit.
Community Development Foundation
Founded in 1999, the Community Development Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that responds to requests from communities seeking solutions to identified local needs. Its major focus is to support youth and assist in developing culturally inclusive and educationally-effective schooling to ensure positive educational outcomes are achieved for all.
The MOASH project was founded at West Northam Primary School (Midlands Education District) in 2000. The arrival of the facility during the term vacation was welcomed by the people of Northam as a positive step in the journey of reconciliation.
The MOASH Project began when the West Northam Primary School community identified a need to offer all students an environment where individual learning styles were recognized and curricula was culturally inclusive.
Increased involvement of Aboriginal parents and caregivers in the decision-making processes of schools was viewed as a key objective. Strong partnerships between students, parents and the school would make possible the addressing of access and participation issues, attendance and literacy and numeracy awareness.
The Australian Children's Trust provided funding to assist with the MOASH building at the Avonvale Primary School in Northam.
